CRAZE IS A SPORT AND AN ART FORM

CRAZE IS A SPORT AND AN ART FORM

The Parkour movement has officially taken off in Plymouth, and the city is just a step away from being among the best in Britain for the urban, disciplined sport known as 'freerunning'. Many people may have seen the recent Channel 4 do-----entary, Jump Britain, which helped publicise the French craze hitting Britain.

It involves skatebording (minus skateboards) with martial arts, gymnastics, suburban boredom and some French joie de vivre.

Since then freerunning has gone from strength to strength, as well as successfully earning the title as a new, exciting, artistic form of expression and being acknowledged as a demanding sport.

Some people may view freerunning as simply 'jumping around'.

In fact it's a sport which requires a great deal of dedication and personal discipline.

In a society where it could be argued we've lost our 'physical identity', freerunning provides an individual with a sense of empowerment and physical determination.

Often likened to the mellow nature of yoga, the gracefulness of dance and the powerful determination behind the skill of martial arts, it is apparent there is much to be gained from the sport.

Like athletics, it also offers physiological benefits of escapism and relaxation in a controlled and adrenalin-rushing way, something which is often needed in a hectic life.

Freerunners believe the environment should be positively used.

It is important to stress to worried readers that participants of freerunning do not cause or condone the destruction of public places - after all, that is their canvas.

Photography, art and film are all valued as being equally important as the jumps themselves and are often used to highlight the art of the movements.

Anyone with any of these interests at any level is welcomed, and the sport does not require specific levels or skills.

Freerunning is a welcome alternative to competitive mainstream street sports, such as skateboarding and BMX-ing.

While a lot of young people feel they have no alternative but to hang around on street corners with energy to burn, the great thing about freerunning is that it combines street life with active expression.

Parkour Brothers

Parkour Brothers

Urban running is the brainchild of longtime friends David Belle and Sebastien Foucan, both of whom rely on instinct to successfully navigate the most direct path from A to B.

Your Time

Keeping to the straight and narrow takes on an altogether different meaning when practiced by adherents of Parkour, a unique discipline that utilizes both sport and philosophy to overcome the everyday obstacles of life.

Whether it’s a chain link fence impeding your route or an impossible-to-please boss threatening your wellbeing, Parkour trains people to master their environment without straying from the path.

There are no roundabout methods employed with Parkour, the brainchild of two free spirits, David Belle and Sebastien Foucan, longtime French acquaintances that aspire to an unfettered existence.

“Key to the philosophy is understanding how much people are inclined to follow, rather than trust their own instincts,” explains Foucan, who resides in London, England (www.parkour.com).

“Parkour develops a person’s own sensitivity. Whether alone or in a group, it’s best conducted without competition, as a kind of process to develop yourself and identify weaknesses.”

More commonly known as free running, Parkour is mistakenly regarded as an extreme sport, the result of undue media emphasis on the physical exploits of a few practitioners capable of jumping from dangerous heights. Their spectacular stunts, showcased on newscasts, result in a misleading image, causing the public to view Parkour as a reckless activity, performed by rebellious youths destined for hospital emergency rooms.

Parkour’s most articulate American spokesperson Mark Toorock of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey (www.americanparkour.com), attempts to set the record straight: “There are thousands of people new to Parkour, and a small number that have been doing it for a long period of time, but you only hear from beginners, not veterans. We’re the ones saying, ‘Be careful of impact, you can’t do that, your knees aren’t going to last, you can’t keep dropping on the concrete, you have to learn how to roll.’ If there are only a few people saying that, and a whole bunch of others with misconceptions, then obviously the wrong message gets through.”

Belle and Foucan urge people to navigate their environment using the most direct route, regardless of obstacles. It’s no surprise then, that vaults and jumps are a key component of Parkour.

Training consists of precision leaps, pull-ups, climbs and movement through narrow spaces. The aim is to develop a wide variety of skills that can be used to fit any situation.

“It’s not about trying to find the biggest challenge,” says Toorock, “it’s trying to find the challenge that suits you, and expands your capabilities. You don’t need to be a super athlete to start Parkour. There are a lot of different movements to it, but the key is surmounting obstacles, which can be a metaphor for moving through life. We face an unending series of challenges in life, but if you know how to physically overcome obstacles then you feel capable of vaulting over personal problems. For a lot of people Parkour is a form of soul searching, it’s a thinking man’s activity. I know it makes me feel more calm and confident.”

Peace of mind or adrenaline rush? Which of the two best defines Parkour?

“It depends upon what you’re looking for,” answers Foucan. “Naturally it’s both, but I’m looking for the first, peace of mind.”

Another misconception about Parkour is that it’s an impulsive activity conceived solely for an urban environment. In fact, Parkour can be conducted anywhere, in a forest, along a shoreline, on a ravine.

Mindset is more important than choice of locale. And a key facet of that mindset is safeguarding your body.

“It’s good to check out surfaces in advance,” comments Toorock. “It’s important to know your whole route. A path in Parkour is usually very short. It may consist of a city park half a block long, where you encounter five or six obstacles. Only do what’s in your tool kit. A three-or-four-foot drop is pretty much the limit for an athletic person. You have to be extremely skilled to safely drop from a greater height.”

Amazing Grace:

Tools and sporting equipment are forbidden in Parkour, which relies solely on physical prowess. Standards are a function of capability, with each person setting their own limits. An obese person stepping over a roadside curb is viewed with the same esteem as someone jumping a five-foot fence.

Like any other discipline, Parkour has its own unique language:

* Jams, a gathering of Parkour enthusiasts, usually numbering between 10 and 15 people, who engage in practice and share techniques.
* Hot Spots are architecturally interesting locations ideally suited for training and demonstrations.
* Cat Leaps refer to the short precision jumps commonly used in Parkour.

When Toorock leaves his home he has a choice of either walking down a set of steps or navigating his way over a retaining wall. The wall impedes the most direct route from the house. True to his beliefs, he vaults it. The essence of Parkour rests in this simple act, not those involving danger.

District B13 Movie Review, Or otherwise known as Banlieue 13

District B13 Movie Review
By: Sheila Roberts

“District B13,” (or “Banlieue 13” to those of you with a Parisian area code), is directed by first-time helmer Pierre Morel from a screenplay co-written by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri. Morel has been the cinematographer on a number of films written and directed by Besson. “District B13” is a well-staged and impressively choreographed contemporary action film and political fiction set in 2013 in a futuristic Paris where isolation walls now surround the ghetto cities. Undesirables have been separated from the rest of the city’s more elite population and are controlled by criminal gangs evoking John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York.” Nearly all of the action takes place in a suburb known as District B13 where, without rules or laws, gangs reign as absolute masters, and the police are outnumbered with their only visibility at the barrier’s checkpoints. Indeed, the opening sequence makes it very clear that local law enforcement has given up trying to handle the criminal element as they hastily evacuate their police station. It’s all part of a master plan that will only become clear at the film’s conclusion. What is never clear is who exactly works for whom and where those who really pull the strings are hiding.

More Bond ~ Contain Spoilers!
Posted by minion / Monday, March 13, 2006 (15:43:01) / (266 reads) International News

Well we have already heard about how PK is going to be used in the next bond film. But i have just discovered some more information

Casino Royale - 07-03-06
Producer Michael G. Wilson describes a key action scene filming in the Bahamas (spoilers)

SPOILER WARNING

Producer Michael G. Wilson has revealed a major action piece from the forthcoming James Bond film "Casino Royale" that is being filmed in the Bahamas.

In an interview with the Nassau Guardian, Wilson explained that in addition to shooting scenes of locations in The Bahamas, a shanty town is being erected in the Coral Harbour area, to depict Madagascar.

"We're using the unfinished hotel at Coral Harbour as a construction site, where we'll shoot a free running episode, featuring a major French free runner whom Bond will chase through the steel scaffolding of the hotel," added Wilson.

"Bond will be tracking down a villain at 'The One and Only Club,' during a private poker game. Albany House will also be used for Bond's return trip to The Bahamas.

---------------------------------

Sebastien Foucan gained stardom throughout much of the world when the gymnastics enthusiast helped invent freerunning, a gravity-defying sport that received exposure in the U.S. via a series of Nike commercials. Now Foucan will employ his high-jumping, obstacle-evading abilities while engaging the new James Bond in one of the most ambitious chase sequences in the history of the action series. Foucan will make his acting debut as Mollaka, a terrorist targeted by Daniel Craig's Bond during an early sequence in November's 21st Bond film, "Casino Royale." When a surveillance operation goes awry, Bond is forced to chase Mollaka on foot, risking life and limb as they scurry through a shantytown and across a dangerous construction site. Currently filming in the Bahamas, "Royale" is based on Ian Fleming's first Bond novel — it will portray some prequel-like moments, including Bond's completion of his first two professional assassinations, which earns him his "00" status. .

up and over When practicing parkour, life's just one big obstacle
Posted by minion / Monday, March 13, 2006 (15:42:14) / (239 reads) International News

up and over When practicing parkour, life's just one big obstacle course.

BY RICHARD CHIN
Pioneer Press

Imagine you're walking down the street when, suddenly, a really big and vicious dog appears and starts lunging at you, obviously intent on tearing you a new one.

Your response is to run away. But then a railing appears in your path. With the dog hard on your heels, you vault the railing. Now, a fence is in your way. You scramble over it. You leap down stairs, hurdle over obstacles, run up walls, slide under gaps, spurt up drainpipes, tumble over drops.

Now, imagine there isn't a dog, but you're still doing all this bounding, leaping and hurdling. You are engaging in a new — and some would say underground and extreme — sport of parkour.

Parkour has been described as the art of quickly moving from one point to another, overcoming barriers in an efficient and flowing manner. Usually, that means turning an urban environment into your personal obstacle course.

Here's another definition: "If you see someone who looks like they're running from the police, but there is no one in pursuit, it's probably parkour."
